South Carolina credit card debt: Some face fraudulent debts

Credit card debt can be difficult to manage, especially once it passes a certain financial mark. However, for many South Carolina residents, some credit card debt doesn't belong to them no matter how adamantly debt collectors argue. One recent trend in fraudulent credit card charges involves the internet.

When a consumer's credit card information is stolen, they may find fraudulent charges on their statements from sex-related internet sites. While many times the credit card companies will decline the charges, collection companies often step in and purchase these alleged debts and then aggressively pursue consumers in order to get them to pay. Thousands of consumers will often pay these debts simply to avoid the perceived fear of credit rating damage.

Although state laws vary when it comes to debts, many require that the company send the consumers a letter that details how much is owed, what the debt is for, who it is owed to and information detailing how they can receive documentation proving the legitimacy of the debt. Consumers who do not believe they owe anything can assert their rights vigorously. Often doing this can get even the most aggressive debt collectors to back off.

Credit card debt can quickly overwhelm South Carolina residents. However, if a debt doesn't belong to them, there are legal avenues that can be taken to ensure the debt is wiped clean. Ensuring one knows their legal rights and then asserting those rights can be enough to shake off aggressive debt collectors and keep a credit report intact. For those consumers who need further help to manage their legitimate debt load, bankruptcy may become a viable option to provide a new financial start.
