Carolina medical bills could be reduced with bankruptcy

South Carolina families have probably been subjected to high medical bills at some point in their lives. While most families are able to manage, sometimes a serious illness results in a staggering amount of medical bills, often creating a dire financial situation. Those affected may gain by understanding their legal rights and securing the help that is readily available to them. Unpaid medical debt can result in harassing collection calls and poor credit ratings if the bills are not paid.

Fortunately, medical bills may be discharged through bankruptcy. Whether it's Chapter 13 or Chapter 7, families may be able to reduce their debts by filing. One family became overwhelmed with debt after the father developed an illness. Although he received treatment and should have recovered, he was the victim of a botched surgery which resulted in life-threatening complications and enough medical debt to prevent the family from paying the monthly rent on time.

After the surgery to treat hemolytic anemia, the man suffered from a nicked intestine, causing his body to go into septic shock. Complications resulted from an additional surgery, and at one point in time, the man was unable to walk. The resulting illness and surgery forced him out of work and his fiancée took extra shifts at work to help. Although they received help from their community, many families are not so lucky and are forced to deal with massive debt on their own.

When South Carolina residents are affected by spiraling medical bills, they may want to consider the option of bankruptcy protection. This could help as they seek to recover from their illnesses and reduce the stress they may feel about trying to pay the debt down. Bankruptcy is often a viable option for families in this situation and can help those affected get back on the road to health, both physically and financially.
