South Carolina medical debt: Faith helps sick mother and daughter

An unexpected illness can quickly rack up debt for South Carolina residents. If the illness turns out to be long-term or chronic, the financial effects could be devastating. One woman experienced this after she received a breast cancer diagnosis. Her medical debt adds up each month anywhere from $300 to $5,000. In addition, the woman has a sick daughter, requiring even more money to go towards medical bills each month.

The woman has turned to faith to help her through, but she wonders sometimes how she and her family are going to make ends meet. Her cancer and her daughter's medical needs forced her husband to quit his job to take care of them both. This was a devastating financial hit to the family, and they often worry whether they will have enough food to feed everyone.

Her daughter suffers from an immune system disorder, which causes her to get frequent infections. She has also been diagnosed with scoliosis, allergies, asthma juvenile rheumatoid arthritis and other conditions. She is required to travel each month for an immune system treatment, and must also miss school frequently when there is an illness traveling through it. When the mother was diagnosed with cancer, she was extremely frustrated with the situation. She has since suffered some complications from her cancer treatment and is homebound.

Medical debt is a growing problem in this country. With skyrocketing health care costs, becoming ill can throw a South Carolina family into dire financial straits. Several organizations exist to help with medical debt and bankruptcy is also an option. Medical bills can be difficult to pay each month when families are already struggling with job loss and other debt. Bankruptcy could discharge some of this debt, potentially allowing families the chance to start over.
