Law-related Sites
- www.scb.uscourts.gov – The official web site of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of South Carolina. This court serves the entire state of South Carolina with a staffed office in Columbia and non-staffed offices in Charleston and Spartanburg where court is held periodically.
- www.scbar.org – The official website for the South Carolina Bar Association. The organization promotes the advancement of justice, professionalism by lawyers and educating the public on the legal issues.
- www.13network.com – This site is more helpful for existing clients who are already in Chapter 13 Bankruptcy. If you obtain a user name and password, it will allow you to track your payments to the trustee, the trustee's payments to creditors, and the overall progress of your case.
Credit Counselors
Prior to filing for bankruptcy, you will be required to consult with an approved credit counseling agency. The purpose of this consultation is to let you know that there may be options other than bankruptcy available to you. Even if credit counseling is not helpful for your situation, you will be required to provide a certificate that you have engaged in such a consultation before you are allowed to file bankruptcy. This consultation may be done in person, on the telephone or on the internet. Although there are others, below are some agencies that have consulted with our clients in the past.
- www.moneymanagement.org – Money Management International - MMI offers help with budgeting, money management and credit issues. The counselors take the time to thoroughly understand your situation and provide you with specific advice. They will work with you to develop a personal financial assessment by analyzing your income, expenses, assets and liabilities.
- www.fsconline.org - The Family Service Center of South Carolina is a multi-service, non-profit agency dedicated to helping you and your family with services such as job training and placement.
- www.cccssavannah.org – Consumer Credit Counseling Service of the Savannah area. CCCS teaches consumers how to manage their money and credit with strategic budget planning information to encourage debt-free living.
